Para su regreso después de un largo parón por maternidad, Julia Roberts ha ido sobre seguro: Tony Gilroy (Michael Clayton) en el guión y realización y Clive Owen (con el que coincidió en Closer) como compañero de cartel.
Duplicity va de dos espías industriales (Roberts y Owen) que juegan a ser más listos que sus jefes (Wilkinson y Giamatti). El planteamiento promete: el espionaje comercial es una variante menos explotada que los 007s, Bournes y compañía, y da pie al mismo nivel de glamour, misterios y traiciones. Sin embargo, Tony Gilroy se enreda sin necesidad con un guión alambicado. Se crea un fuerte misterio sobre el producto espiado y sobre el juego de espionajes y contraespionajes entre las dos corporaciones rivales y al mismo tiempo se entrelazan flasbacks narrando la relación de amor y codicia entre la pareja de protagonistas. Se acaba comprendiendo lo que ocurre, aunque al precio de no llegar a tener el corazón en vilo por los personajes. Lo mejor son la escena de créditos inicial con la pelea a cámara lenta entre Giamatti y Wilkinson, los lujosos escenarios y la jovial música de James Newton Howard. Julia Roberts mantiene su atractivo y su oficio; Clive Owen cumple la orden del realizador de poner cara de guapo; Giamatti y Wilkinson disfrutan haciendo de despiadados ejecutivos.
El final desnuda la blandura del McGuffin: Tanto juego al gato y al ratón, planes concienzudos y alta tecnología para robar la fórmula de un crecepelo y que los protagonistas se queden como los ratones del libro de autoayuda. Se deja ver.
